Hi Shaza

Welcome to the forum.

I moved your post to it's own thread so that all your answers would be in one place and not on someone else's thread

We have a couple of migration agents on the forum (Alan Collett and SOMV) and I used Emigration Group in the UK, whereas Dolly (the other moderator) used George Lombard. Other members have recommended their agents too on previous posts.

If your husband is reluctant to move it could work to sit down and think about what you want from moving to Australia. If you read through the sticky posts at the top of the forum you'll discover that it costs more than most people think to live here, although the houses can be cheaper (depending on where you move to). Salaries can be less but then the lifestyle is much better.

Once you know why you both want to move here then you can paint of picture of what it would be like here and that may sway him.

It costs a lot to move here (visas, shipping, setting up) so you don't want to do that and then have to move back if your husband is unhappy.

Flights back to the UK (or anywhere really) cost more than I had thought, and people do miss family and friends.

After saying all that I'm an only child who loves her parents (and used to see them frequently) but I don't regret the move out here. It was my idea in the first place though.... We've been out here 14 months and we are part of clubs and making friends out here.

BTW I'm in South Australia but not in Adelaide so I may be able to help with general question on SA but not specific to Adelaide, other than it's a lovely small city.

Regards,
Karen

Hi there,

Welcome to the forum.

Reading your post sent a few small alarm bells ringing. I know it's very early days for you on deciding whether to emigrate but I have to be honest and say if your husband isn't 100% for the move I'd really think twice about it. I have known couples where one isn't as 'eager' as the other, they make the move over just to appease their partner, and after a while want to return home and it causes all sorts of problems (and even worse if children are involved).

If you really do want this then I think a trip over here first would be advisable. Your husband could then see the country for himself and be able to base a decision from there.

Dolly

Hi Shaza,
like you i am planning a move to Adelaide.......have been there, loved it.

Depends on what you want, what you can afford etc.....
People are friendly, open and honest.
Best suburbs are the eastern ones, Burnside, Bel Air; but coastal ones are equally as nice....Henley Beach.
Avoid too far north; bit "run down"; although i didn't see anywhere rough or dodgy like some inner city areas here.

You get more for your money south of Adelaide, and like wise north; but it depends where you work etc.
Just don't expect a Sydney or Melbourne vibe; Adelaide is a quieter town; plenty to do, just closed by 11pm!!!!

Good Luck
J

Really worried about timing, cant afford to go at xmas time.......plus what we would do about schools etc is a concern.

if all goes well, we will go about the 15th, organise schools, have a merry xmas, then back to reality!!!!!
Good luck with it all

Hi Shaz,

right; i started the ball rolling in April; recce visit, interview, job offer, registration application all in April; Medicals in June. Police check in Sept.

Just got my registration, awaiting the visa........so it's a waiting game now.

Jobs on the MODL are fairly comprehensive; sponsorship can be a bind but you could always apply for state sponsorship (475 visa); what i will say, is this type can take forever to actually get processed.
The DIAC website is really useful, i recommend you check it out

Housing stock, like the uk can be variable; check the real estate.com.au/ domain.com.au for some ideas.

Jobs; i check the adelaide advertiser website weekly; there is usually a good selection; and it covers the whole nation!!

Cost of living; tbh, sometimes it looks comparable to the uk; some stuff costs more, for example, ikea stuff is almost double what you pay here, for obvious reasons!! Food quality, i think is better value, espesh veggies.

The main thing is to be absolutely sure of your reasons for going. Research as much as you can about the place, visit if you can.....
we wanted a new start, to give our kids the experience of another way of life, to have a work/life balance that does actually balance. Then of course, the lifestyle......and the weather to try and have more outside activities....

Good Luck, lovey, i hope you get there
Jane
