Default 4 year temporary visa?

Most people who apply for a general skilled visa have to have a certain period of employment in that job (it can vary depending on which job you do).

If you have a look at the sticky at the top of the forum page "please read....." and go to the DIAC link, you'll find all the visa options and you 'll be able to see which one may be the one for you (have a look at the sponsored visas - regional/company).

I'd also recommend giving a migration agent a call and ask their opinion, the first consultation is usually free without obligation and will save you heaps of time trying to work out what options you have.

Any other questions, just fire away.

Hi Guys,

Firstly I'd like to say how useful I've been finding this site since I first discovered it today, so thanks to all that have contributed. I guess I'm in a similar position to that of the person who started this topic - I graduated 3 years ago in mechanical engineering but have travelled a lot since and haven't worked as an engineer in that time - from the immigration website I gather that working 1 out of the last 4 years in the profession is compulsory. This would be an inconvenience rather than a deal-ender as I start work this month as an engineer.

So, my next question is this - I have heard mention of the 4 year temporary visa; would it be possible to head over there on a 1 year visitor visa, then find an engineering job, get sponsored on the 4 year visa and eventually stay over there permanently?

My best friend is a sydney lad and I shall be living with him when i'm out there so all the house-finding parts are irrelevant right now. I was hoping to be going out there around Christmas time but obviously I am rather uneducated in the timeframe as well as a lot of other things about the move - hence me asking for your help!

Sorry to drag this post on but finally, I am going to the expo in Leeds on 18/19 Oct so I hope to find out even more there too, just hoping you guys can give me a heads up.

Thank you ever so much for your time,

Al

Hi Ali M,

Welcome to the forum

I moved your query to a separate post so that the original posters thread didn't get hijacked

Have you checked out the visa links in the "PLEASE READ....." and "Thinking of emigrating" posts? They will tell you what you can and can't do with the visas since I think that for some of them you need to be outside the country (but I can't remember which are which off hand).

It's also always good to talk to a migration agent and the first consultation is usually free.

Regards,
Karen

Yes you could head down on a tourist visa (valid for a year but only 3 months at a time, unless you specifically apply for long tourist visa), apply for a 457 employer sponsored visa and, once you have had you skills assessed and you qualify for the permanent visa you could then apply for the permanent skilled visa.
