Default Where to start??

Hi guys, my name is gem (24) from rainy cornwall (england) could do with a ickle bit of help.

Me and the better half (22)(qualified grease monkey and firefighter) want to make the move to Australia, I've just come back from 8 months in The gambia, Africa, and since coming back cornwall just isnt the same, i miss the outdoors, the great weather and the laid back way of life. so we have both deicded on australia.

i have a couple of questions.

Is it best to apply for a visa to go travelling, or a working holiday visa??? then apply when we are there to stay???

Or is it best to apply for jobs first??? the better half has already been offered a few, problem is, all the jobs listed on the internet seem to be in the cities, and to be honest, i couldnt live or work in one.......

we both decided we cannot live in a city or big town, currently we live in a village in the middle of nowhere, which is great, i love knowing everyone, i love the local pub, and i love not being near the tourists.

Its hard trying to research living more in the outback, and everyone pretty much seems to live in the big city's.

All i want from my life is to live near the coast, have very hot weather (used to africa should be able to handle australia) simple job.....and be laid back.

so where to live? head for australia and see what happens or apply for jobs now???or just any ideas in general???

cheers in advance
x

Hi Gem,

Have you had a look at the immigration website? There is a link in the "PLEASE READ..." post. There is a visa wizard on the website that may be useful although it doesn't cover all visas.

If you want to go for sponsorship you may be able to get State sponsorship in which case you can choose a smaller are to move to. Not everyone is in major towns - I live in Mount Gambier, South Australia which has 25,000 people. Of course it depends on what you call major According to some people we are in Melbourne it's the Bush but it's not as far as we're concerned!

If you haven't been here before I would suggest a holiday here first so that you get the feel of the different areas.

If you want to live in very hot weather then the Southern parts of Asutralia may not be hot enough for you - what do you call hot weather? In Summer we hit the early to mid forties, but usually more about mid thirties last year.

Regards,
Karen

Hi

The sentence above is actually me!! Im moving to Brisbane as im told it is tropical there, 22degrees in the winter and 45 degrees in the summer also it is very hummid. My job will be in Brisbane CBD but about 10miles away is where i ll be living (if all goes to plan) which is on the coast as i love the sea. Where i plan to go surfing, diving, relaxing etc etc If you look on the map there are lots of islands around so there plenty of quiet places to kick back.

regards
Hels

Hi,
As Karen said probably would be a good idea to come over on holiday have a good look around all the different areas and get a feel for places and suburbs. We travelled (drove) via Surfers up to Cairns and got a feel for all the different states, North was to hot for us. Agree with you we didnt want to be in a city either as we came from a small village also, but everyone is different. Good luck with your search.

Sounds like you have everything sorted Hels, you are living the dream already good on ya!!
Hope you have a wonderful time in Australia your positive attitude is great, it will be the driving force for your journey ahead. ENJOY!! X

Default Check out Adelaide or Cairns

Hi:

It's not hard to get to 'middle of nowhere' in AU, even from the cities.

I suggest you check out Alice Springs, Adelaide, Darwin, Cairns, or most places in West Australia. The definition of an AU 'city' would not be the same as Europe or the UK (much smaller and less people). In my opinion the only real good sized cities are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth.

Even Canberra might fit your definition. Let's not forget Tasmania (Launceston and Hobart).

Come for a visit (Working Holiday if you want to do some casual work). Queensland and WA seem to be best places to get those casual jobs.

Good luck

Hi Amaslam,

Welcome to the forum.

I agree that cities have a different definition here but Adelaide and Tasmania can not be described as hot Adelaide had 11 days over 40 degrees last summer and it was all over the news since it's so unusual! Tasmania is colder than London, UK since that's where I moved from. I love Tassies laid back attitude but it's not for someone who wants hot weather. Even in summer Tassie can be cold due to the higher altitude in some of the areas.

Regards,
Karen
