Lightbulb Advice needed please!!

Hello all.

Both my wife and I would like to move to the USA in the nex few years. We have no exact time limit. We have travelled all around the USA and just love the the way of life there. However being from London we would like to move to a large city.

I would just like some advice on what are our chances. Both my wife and I are primary school teachers and have been for the past 3 years. We both have degrees and my wife also has a masters degree.

I dont know if there are any previous UK teachers who use this forum but any adive would be very welcome.

Kind regards

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

As primary school teachers, you may be up against some slightly more difficult obstacles when it comes to finding jobs in the US. In many areas, school teachers are considered a sort of "almost-civil service" which means that it can be difficult to get hired as a foreigner.

There is also a feeling in some areas that, particularly in the primary grades, teachers should not "confuse" children by having pronounced accents other than that of the local community.

OK, that said, just because your training is as primary teachers doesn't mean you can't find jobs that are more or less in your field - say, in educational publishing, working for a company that designs and/or makes "educational toys" or educational websites for children... something that draws on your training and experience, but not necessarily in the classroom. Or, there are always private schools, especially those associated with the British diplomatic community.

Just a few ideas. It's not easy these days to find a job in the US as a foreigner, but it's definitely not impossible. You just have to be creative about how you go about it.
Cheers,
Bev
