What happens when we go through customs when we emigrate?

I am waiting for our visas to be delivered from the embassy however my 16 year old daughter will not be traveling with us at the same time if that is possible she may be travelling at a leter date. She will ahve to travel within 6 months to activate her visa but shhe is 16 so what will we have to do when we first enter the usa on our visas and will my 16 year old be able to do this alone? It has been mentioned when I send the additional documentation to the embassy to get our visas that Ishould advise them my daughter may be travelling later. Does anyone knoiwabout thisand what happens when I get to customs in america when we enter for the first time on our visas?

I'd be interested to know this too; we are hoping to travel there in October but my 20 year old won't be able to go till later, I just assumed we went through customs as usual & showed them our visas.
