Welcome to the forum!

Since the H1B visa is tied to an employer sponsor, your best bet might be to start researching jobs available at the eligible employers. If you google H1B visa you can find various lists of the the 100 or 150 top employers who sponsor H1B candidates in the US. This would be a good starting point - either to look for job openings in the US (via the Internet), or to find your local branch of these companies and approach them from where you currently live.

One rule of thumb - you should never pay to apply for a job. I'd steer clear of the websites that ask you to pay. Try going directly to the websites for some of the big US companies that are likely to hire IT professionals - HP, IBM, Dell, etc. etc.

I know they have cut way back on the number of H1B visas each year, and even the big companies are complaining. Keep at it, though - maybe even trying to find a job initially in your home country with one of the companies, and see if they'll transfer you in a couple of years.

Checking out a company from a distance requires some detective work - most of which can be done online. But be aware that scam artists are clever.

One approach is to try and locate the company in the "Yellow Pages" (commercial directory) of an online phone book for the area. Or, just check out the phone number for the company given on the website. (Sometimes you can pay for a reverse directory check of a phone number.)

I've also tried googling the company name, the names of any executives or other personnel listed on the site and even the phone numbers or e-mail addresses listed on the website in question. See if the company has made it into the local newspapers or financial press. (And if they have, see if the details listed match what you have found on the website.) Google any product names listed on the site (and see if they have been recalled or reviewed).

Use Google Earth to check the address given for the website. You can't always tell, but if the address you have is a vacant lot that tells you something. (If only that the company is too new to show up on Google Earth.)

Check the company for foreign affiliates and then see if the websites for the foreign affiliates mention the US facility. You could even try calling any phone number you find for the company and see if it is answered with the company name.

With all the scams out there it pays to be skeptical. You just have to be a bit creative in what and how you check these things out.
Cheers,
Bev
