Default Getting A Child Over 21 Into U.S.

Hello to the Expat Community,

This is my maiden post and hopefully the first of many.

I have an American wife and have just obtained my green card. The process was very quick and straightforward. My wife is a project manager by trade so all the i's were dotted and t's were crossed from the start. I obtained my green card after 4 months, I was given a 32 month estimate at the outset. The various agencies could not have been more helpful.

For me now my goal is to hopefully enable my unmarried 22 year old daughter to come to the U.S. when she graduates from unversity next year in the UK. She spent this last year at LSU in Baton Rouge on an educational exchange as well as spending time on the West Coast the year before. She has her heart set on making a life over here, this is a great thing for me knowing that atleast one of my 2 kids wouldn't be an ocean away.

I fully onderstand that this is an entirely differnt propositon. I believe she falls into a lesser B2 category. My heart sank when the guy who conducted my gc interview said he thought it could 6-8 years.

Would anyone be able to share their experiences about the actual time scale and anyway to help the process.

Thank you, I would be so very grateful for any help.

Visa Bulletin

Work your way through the official monthly bulletin and bookmark it so you can keep an eye on it.
Your daughter is of age so you have to get your US citizenship before you can sponsor her.

The guy who conducted your interview was telling the truth.....
When you become a USC, which is in 3 or 5 years from the date of becoming a LPR (depending whether you apply through marriage to a USC or not) is when you can apply.
For a child over 21, the process can take many years. I understood it to be 7-10.
Congrats on getting your GC, by the way!!!

Thanks for that. Yes I am really happy about the green card, but the thought of all those years until my daughter can have the chance to settle here does temper the euphoria a little.
Thank you again for the info.

Saddle-Tramp

Your daughter could apply for a Masters program in the US. Or she could try and look for work in the US. I know both are not easy and the Masters program is costly and would only allow her to be in the US for a couple of years. But, while studying she could try and network and do internships and look for a job. Just some other ideas for you and your family to consider.
