Leaving the US with precious metals

I will be leaving the US in couple of months. I have a collection of silver and gold coins for total value of around $18,000. I would like to know when leaving the US could there be a problem with the TSA airport security because of my coins?

You definitely need to declare them (and the fact that you're taking them out of the country).

If you're leaving the country for good, you may be required to file a "sailing permit" (to settle up all tax issues) before you go.

Hi Bev and thanks for your reply. I wonder if there will be any fees involved. Also, I'm not a U.S. citizen or green card holder, but international student, so I'm just returning home with my small precious metals collection.

You have receipts for the purchases?
