Default Refused a Mortage

My wife is a naturalised British citizen while I am still on a work permit. We both work on a stable job. We went to a popular high street bank to ask how much we could borrow because we want to buy a house but the bank said they can't lend us money as a couple because of my residency status, i.e., I have less than 2 years in my work permit. I would like to know if the bank is right in refusing us a mortgage. Are there any other lenders who can lend us the money to buy a house?
