Maybe that is the perception germans have of italians ie. non westerners (the impression one gets when hearing what your PM has to say on the matter but I digress on this point....).

I didn't say that half of the Italians are Westerners but half of the Westerners (i.e. Europeans and Americans) are Italians as 15,000 (your number) of the 31,000 (Paul's number) are 48% (so nearly half). Interesting you read it the other way round. Any chance that you're from the north?
Rumour has it there are 5,000 Germans in Greater Cairo (see Deutsche in Ägypten: Chaos, Aufruhr - ab nach Hause - Politik | STERN.DE 01.02.2011 - sorry I'm short two posts to actually post the url). That leaves 4,000 other Europeans? I'd love to find better numbers!
