You could get family assistance if you have children, a little towards your rent (not much mind you pay the rest out of anything else you have) money towards childcare when you get a job and thats about it. Most welfare benefits you can not claim as a new migrant!

Look here for renting. Rents do not come cheap in Aus. http://www.domain.com.au/
