As far as your 7 yr old is concerned, you may want to check here: Students Who Learn Differently (Federation of American Women's Clubs Overseas -- Educational Support Committee) for resources and contacts. It has been a few years, but when I was in contact with an American expat group here in Paris, I knew a couple of mothers who said that the French schools are not very good in acknowledging or working with learning difficulties.
