Im not sure how NZ system works, but Im from OZ, and the US system is closest to OZ age wise (for most states of OZ)

We had 4-5 Preschool
4-5 Prep/Kindergarton
5-6 grade 1

Most of British schools take them from 3.
Some nurserys do Reception and KS1 also
