Before I came to Oz I read up on their slang which helped a little bit....but sad to say I could not prepare myself completely...had to live it to learn it. A few things still confuse me...like when they call a break in a working day a "smoker" even though nobody smokes. You get used to it pretty quickly though. One thing, you're lucky with your American accent as you guys speak very clearly and slowly so everyone will be able to understand you. However: do not be surprised if you often can't understand them. I get so annoyed with myself when I don't catch what they are saying...which is almost always when ordering food/drinks at restaurants and takeouts...and also at the till when grocery shopping. Prepare yourself: They sometimes ask if you have flybys and they say it so fast that I *still* only hear a mumble. I just can't understand how the other patrons understand them. Ozzies do really talk fast.
