I know exactly what you mean. In our case from inception to walking through passport control with visas in passports was about 3 years, and it was a very rocky road to get there. I was manically excited by the time we got off the plane and stood in the passport control queue, felt absolutely awesome. Got to our turn, chappie had a quick word (he was a Scot that moved over 20 years ago as it turned out so he'd been through what we had). He was as chatty as he could be considering the hundreds of people he still had to see and waved us on, but took a few minutes to welcome us to Australia - which was really nice.
We got through, stood on the other side and then just looked at each other. It was like, right what do we do now then? I didn't expect pomp and ceremony, pom pom wielding girls or a ticker tape parade - so we stood there, hugged each other and then went to find the hire car!!!!!
