I would definitely say Tauranga

OK so it's my hometown, but all bias aside, it has the best climate, is right by the beach, has a lovely city centre in TGA itself and also Mt Maunganui centre + beach etc across the bridge.

Prices are not the lowest there, but you can find some nice places in Suburbs around the place.

Unfortunately though Auckland is the place with the jobs, I think. The climate in Auckland is also reasonalbly pleasant. I'm not a city girl myself so I really don't like AKL at all. But I have heard people say it's pretty good with the parks, beaches, centre etc etc.
