I am an aussie living in the states and moving back to Sydney later this year - Childcare is ridiculously expensive in australia! in sydney where I want to live it is between $70 and $100 a day! I am paying in Miami $550USD a month! And the reason they wont email you back is there is waiting lists and what I have been told is you have to literally keep dropping in on the day cares to check on the wait lists before you can get it. One day care in sydney told me - call me around this time and keep calling me every week because if you are calling me constantly you will get the place even if you are on the bottom of the list because you are fresh in my mind when the space comes up. Also with the real estate agents they wont call you either because rental properties are in demand and there is a lot of people trying to get the places you have to be calling them constantly as well! good luck....I am in the same boat - I have a 2 1/2 yo and I will proabably be paying more in daycare a week than in rent!
