I've been in contact with a property rental agency in brisbane to see what kind of documentation you will need to produce in order to rent a place when you get there as the rules over ther are a bit more strict than they are over here.
The rental system is run on a points system.
You need 100 points.

Drivers license 30 points.
Passport 30 points.
Proof of age card 30 points.
Previous rental documents, eg; rent book, bond receipt, 4 rent receipts. 25 points.
Pay slips or utility bills. 15 points.
Birth cert. 10 points.

If you are a home owner you should bring a reference of mortgage payments, contract of sale documents and bank account statements.

I lived in Oz about ten years ago and I do know that rental agencies are pretty strict in their policies.
