We were hoping she would be eligible for the equivalent of HECS.
When I did my teaching qualification around 2000 in the UK, we all received a grant, except one lady who had spent many years out of the UK and was excluded and had to pay the full amount. On the form we had to complete, it asked whether we had been out of the country for more than three years.

Not sure about the situation today, but it was unfair as at that time, all my ESOL students got free English and computer classes and yet this lady had to pay 500 pounds and she was British born and bred.
