The passport charges in France are a scandal as are many of the services provided for expats abroad.
the premium price for the passports are to support the costs of running the British Consulate (fact).
If you have someone with an address in the UK, post the passports to the UK or find a friend who can take them, and then follow the cheaper routes available in the UK.
Speedferries had a motto 'fight the pirates'. Expats need the same slogan!
