The only worry about living on the Turkish side is, Turkey is not part of the EU, so would it be harder to apply for residenty, etc?

1000' cross into the South each day to work so not an issue - they either walk over at Ledra Palace crossing or drive over so that is not an issue.
Property in lefkosa is much cheaper and before the Greek Cyps kick off there are plenty of pre 74 Turkish title properties available there.
Don't worry about residence as very simple - go to Police and fill in the forms - they give you medical chit - go to clinic (many around) X ray of chest and blood test - wait about 10 days pick up medical result - back to police then to Civil immigration who will issue permit. simple and easy now.
