just another quick question i will be starting a new life in Oz from scratch with about £12000 or $30,000 do you think this will be ok to rent somewhere in either sydney/brisbane/melbourne un till i find a job in I.T?
Hi Andrew,

Since you have submitted through an agent I would ask them the visa questions since I'm not an agent - just someone who went through the process last year.

It may depend on what sort of visa you have applied for. Our skilled independent migrant took 2 years since we weren't on the demand list. The agent may be able to give you some idea of timescales or check www.austimeline.com.au since quite a few people fill that in to help others with how long the visa is taking.

We bought rather than rented before we moved out here (so we could prove our income) but if you read through (or search) the posts you'll read what others are going through with the rental markets. I found that banks were more interested in your income rather than what you brought with you.

You can check out the rentals (and sales) on websites like
Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au
www.domain.com.au

There is also a cost of living thread that I started (towards the top of the forum) that will give you an idea of the costs out here. Those costs are for South Australia though and I think that some of the major cities may be more expensive.

Hope that helps,
Karen
