Only one of you applies and the rest of the family is put on the visa too.

That depends on the visa you apply for - we went for permanent residency. It took us longer but they can't get rid of us unless we commit a crime, so we're here for good!

We are hard working and support ourselves but the visa thing confuses us.

Have you been through the sticky posts towards the top of the forum? Especially the one thinking of emigrating? You can check whether your skills are on the critical skills list since then you get priority processing.

It's easier than it seems IF you fit the requirements that Oz are looking for. Usually they need to be a combination of education and experience that they are looking for and these change (especially in the current economic climate). Skills that were required a few weeks ago are no longer required....

One last thing does it matter where you apply from?? as I said I am a british citizen living in Sweden for now..

Have you had a look at the visa wizard? There is a link under the DIAC info in the 'PLEASE READ....' post.
I'm not sure if the rules are different for Swedish citizens, but myself (UK) and my husband (Irish) didn't have any issues about where we came from.
I was in IT at the time and worked as an IT contractor with my own company for 8 years (at the time of visa application) and my husband was a maintenance gardener. Since it was hard to prove my skill set as primary applicant and since I didn't have a degree my husband was primary applicant and I was added as spouse.
We applied for permanent residency through skilled independent route and it was granted in 2004. We didn't move to Oz until July 2007 since we wanted to make sure that our businesses and investments were running smoothly before we moved.
I did soooo much research you wouldn't believe it!

We also visited Oz several times to make sure that we were doing the right thing for us.
We've been here almost 2 years now and not regretted it at all.
Regards,
Karen
