What advice would you give?
What one piece of advice would you give to someone moving to a new country? Or anywhere new?
I'd tell them to accept all social invitations, no matter how dull or uninteresting or awful they may seem to you. When you first move somewhere, there is usually a little flurry of social things. If you are tired, or think duck pin bowling sounds awful, and turn some invitations down, you may be passing up opportunities to get to know people that won't come again. Not because people aren't friendly, but because you are no longer novel and you've sort of set a tone of saying no. If people actually are unfriendly, then this is even more critical.
Once you've been there for a while, the social things will settle out. But at first, accept just about every invitation.
