Memphis City Guide
Memphis is the largest city in Tennessee.  It is well known as the Home of the Blues and the place where the city’s most popular son, Rock ‘n Roll legend Elvis Presley, was born.

The city is also the home of the River Kings Hockey Team, Memphis Grizzlies NBA Basketball Team and the Redbirds Baseball Team.

Memphis’ economy was once centered on cotton.  The city is still one of the world’s largest cotton markets, but a variety of other economic activities have soon been developed. Memphis has now morphed into a busy air cargo center. Its most famous tenant is no other than the   FedEx Corporation.

Residential Places in Memphis

As a city of good abode, looking for apartments or homes for rent in Memphis is not a problem. Apartments are plenty throughout the place, and prices are comparatively lower than the national average.  The average price is only $477 per month, with a median rent of $570.

For condos for rent, upscale apartment buildings and renovated lofts, some of the popular locations are Germantown, Barlett, Lakeland, Vollintine-Evergreen, Central Gardens, Collierville and Cooper-Young.  You will also find a great number of apartments for rent near the University of Memphis.
        

Hospitals and Universities of Memphis

The city’s pride and the city’s largest institution of higher learning is the University of Memphis.  It offers 15 bachelor’s degrees in more than 50 majors and 70 concentrations, not to mention the master’s degree it offers in 46 subjects and doctoral degrees in 21 disciplines, in addition to a doctorate in Law and a specialist degree in education.

Other colleges and universities in Memphis include Christian Brothers University, Crichton University, LeMoyne-Owen College, Memphis College of Art, Rhodes College, Southern College of Optometry, Southwest Tennessee Community College, and Tennessee Technology Center at Memphis and the only institution of higher learning which sits in the downtown area, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

Renowned as a leader in the medical field, Memphis has a great number of hospitals -- from a tertiary-care teaching hospital, the Baptist Memorial Hospital, to the world’s highest center for research and treatment of pediatric cancers, the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The city is also the site of the third largest hospital system in the United States - the Methodist Healthcare, a private, non-profit hospital, which operates six hospitals in the area.  Other full service hospitals in the area are the Regional Medical Center and the Saint Francis Hospital.

Commercial Places in Memphis

The city of Memphis offers a variety of places to shop, from the downtown to the uptown area.  From famous-name national chains to exceptional boutiques to the 125 years old vintage store, the A Schwab Department Store, the city had become the shopping destination in the region. The visit to the city would be incomplete without visiting Beale Street. It offers a wide collection of Blues and the King’s souvenirs or memorabilia. The city also has the Belz Factory Outlet, a place where bargain seekers are guaranteed to be satisfied. It is situated in Lakeland, a 40 minutes ride from the east of downtown Memphis.  

To take respite from a busy day, a stroll to the famous Beale Street is a welcome treat. Music of the great B.B. King and W.C. Handy among others is being performed by the talented blues band along with sumptuous foods and drinks. Indeed nightlife is beyond compare in Memphis!

Restaurants 

For those who love fine dining, they will find in Memphis some of the country’s top rated restaurants. For a choice of French-Asian dining, Chez Phillipe is the place to be; for those who love Brazilian style, Texas de Brazil is unmatched; for elegant downtown dining the Grill 83 is highly recommended. Other acclaimed restaurants are Aubergine Restaurant at 5007 Black Road for french cuisine; Blues City Café for finger-licking barbecue ribs, fried catfish, seafood gumbo and oven-broiled steaks; and the Elvis Presley’s Memphis Restaurant and Nightclub located at 126 Beale Street for contemporary southern cuisine craving.

Just a few miles east of downtown, you will find the Sun Studio, where Elvis recorded his first hit song “That’s all right”. This most renowned studio in the world is home to the first microphone of the King and the recording room of the earliest blues, among others.
 
But, of course! One could not just miss Graceland, located just on the south of downtown Memphis. A tour inside this ever-famous estate would only cost one $22. The package includes an audio-guided tour, translated in a number of languages, into the heart of the Elvis mansion, a sightseeing of two jet airplanes built for Elvis and a visit to his garage where many of his cars and motorcycles are housed.
 
Other attractions worth visiting are the Memphis Botanic Garden; the Pink Palace Museum; the first IMAX Theater in the Mid-South, which is the Crew Training International IMAX Theater and the Memphis Walk of Fame, which is patterned after the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but theirs is exclusively designated for Memphis singers, musicians, composers, and writers such as Bobby Blue Band, W. C. Handy, B.B. King and Alberta Hunter, among others.

Service Establishments of Memphis

The largest three-service municipal utility is the Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division (MLGW).  It owns and manages one of the largest artesian water system in the world.   It serves Memphis and Shelby Country, Tennessee.  For services, you may call MLGW at (901) 544-6549.  For new service, it generally requires a fee as a deposit.

Most of the car-rental companies and cab services are available in major urban areas. Travelers are advised to avail of the car rental services rather than the taxi service since the latter is expensive because aside from the mileage charge, there is an additional tipping of 10 to 15 percent.

Bus service is available in the city but it is ordinarily confined to city centers and commuter routes and not from one attraction to another in the vicinity.  However, Memphis has trolley systems, which usually charges $1, or less to transport visitors, tourists or any one who wanted to visit one attraction to another nearby.

Various media stations and newspapers also serve the city.  For television stations, ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, PBS and UPN Affiliates are available, while Time Warner Communications provides a digital-cable service.  Accessible radio stations are the Local AM: 17 and Local FM: 25.  Newspapers circulating around the area are the Commercial Appeal; Memphis Flyer; Memphis Business Journal; Tri-state Defender, and the Daily News.

There are numerous national, international and Memphis-based corporations that serve the city’s telecommunication services.  Noted ones are Bellsouth Corporation, AT&T Corporation, MCI WorldCom, and Qwest Communications Center.

Police services and assistance in the city is provided by the Memphis Police Department located at 201 Poplar Ave, 12th Floor, and Memphis, TN 38103.  There are nine Precincts in the area of Memphis.  For non-emergency or to request police assistance, one may dial 545-COPS or 545-2677, or dial 911 for emergency cases.
