El Paso City Guide
El Paso is the 6th largest city in the great state of Texas and was considered one of the fastest growing cities in the country from 2000 to 2006. Geographically, El Paso is situated right between two majestic mountain ranges on the shores of the Rio Grande, and it is itself a mountainous desert region that is abundantly blessed with sunshine throughout most of the year.

Even in the state of Texas–which is certainly not lacking in colorful historical events– El Paso stands out in sharp relief with a rich culture that is as dependent on its geographical features as anything else. Conquistadors, highways dating back to antiquity, gun fights…all of these are part and parcel of the El Paso legacy, and serve to make it the distinctive city that it is.



Residential Places in El Paso

Prices of residential properties in El Paso continued to rise over much of 2007, although it was at a much slower rate than the previous years. While the increase is predicted to continue for at least the next two years, it is still expected to be at a more moderate pace than the last three years.

Real estate analysts have attributed the sluggish rate of new residential developments during 2007 to an abundance of high-end properties on the market. Developers then were more focused on selling off existing houses instead of building new ones. With the expected increase in demand for houses in 2008–which is partly due to the increased military personnel in the nearby Fort Bliss and Biggs Army Airfield–the real estate market is likely to be headed for another growth period.

What all this means is that while house prices are on the upswing, the rate is not that drastic. All indications point to this year being a great time to buy a house in El Paso, with considerable appreciation expected over the next several years.

Hospitals and Universities of El Paso

The hospitals in El Paso are widely considered to be excellent both in terms of facilities and service. The sole general hospital in the city is the Thomason Hospital, and that is where the only Level I trauma center in the El Paso can be found. Some of the other hospitals in the city are: Del Sol Medical Center-East, Las Palmas–Del Sol Rehab. Hospital, Las Palmas Medical Center-West, Horizon Specialty Hospital, Rio Vista Rehab. Hospital, Sierra Medical Center, Southwestern General Hospital, William Beaumont Army Medical Center, Providence Memorial Hospital, and Physicians Hospital.

El Paso also has a ln.ong history of excellence in education. Many of the schools in the city have in fact been acknowledged as being some of the best schools in the state of Texas. Some of the most noteworthy schools in the city are: University of Texas at El Paso, Texas Tech University Health, Howard Payne University, Pinney, Gloria - Texas Tech Medical Center, El Paso County Community College, and International Business College.

Commercial Places in El Paso

El Paso is a great place for both shopping and for dining out, and with most commercial establishments in close proximity to each other, you can thankfully do both!

Much of the shopping activity is centered downtown, and it is easy to see why. The area is an absolutely bewildering mishmash of western clothing, southwestern art pieces, and Mexican handicrafts. The Galeria San Ysidro, on Texas Avenue is particularly worth a look, compromised as it is of three floors of art, furniture, and household accessories from all over the world.

When you start to feel the familiar hunger pangs from shopping, you can check out Café Central, for its diverse selection of dishes both traditional and modern, H&H Car Wash and Coffee Shop, for its classic 50s-style diner interior, and L&J Café, which serves excellent regional and American food.

Time Warner Cable Inc. is the main provider of cable TV services in the city, although there are many other smaller cable TV companies around. AT&T provides satellite TV services, in addition to broadband Internet, Digital TV, wireless phone and fixed line phone services.
