Situated at the state of Maryland, Baltimore, the biggest city in the state, is an independent city. It is neither in any county nor is it a county itself. The city, though, has the same powers as the other 23 counties of Maryland. Residential Places in BaltimoreResidential places in Baltimore offer a huge range of options, whether in the city or suburbs. Baltimore’s cost of living is 3% higher than the national average, but residents are fortunate because average incomes are above the average. There is a wide selection of apartments for rent in the city, with a median rent of $650 per month. Small apartment rentals generally range from $500 to $600, or spend $2,000 or more monthly for rental of plush townhouses or high-class apartments with a view. Hospitals and Universities of BaltimoreIn the city sits two highly commended medical institutions -- the Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) and the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC).The Johns Hopkins Hospital is a teaching hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Baltimore houses several places of higher learning – private, public, and parochial schools. The Archdiocese of Baltimore operates a total of 100 Roman Catholic schools in the city and nearby counties of its jurisdiction. Baltimore is the home of several famous colleges and universities. Johns Hopkins University and its medical center have won fame throughout the world. Other institutions include Goucher College, a private college in suburban Towson; and Morgan State University, one of the nation’s oldest and most noted black schools. The Peabody Conservatory of Music is also well known. The University of Maryland has two campuses in the area: the University of Maryland at Baltimore and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, in Catonsville. The University of Baltimore is in the city. Other private schools are Baltimore Hebrew University, Baltimore International College, and College of Notre Dame of Maryland. Some of the public schools located in the suburbs that surround the city are Community College of Baltimore County and Anne Arundel Community College. Commercial Places in BaltimoreBaltimore is a great travel destination. It has lots to offer to any visitor, including top class shopping centres, the best restaurants, and nightlife selections.The metropolitan area offers prime concert venues and sought-after watering holes. In the downtown area, rock bands from across the nation perform at the Ram’s Head Tavern and Recher Theater. Also located downtown are the classy and glamorous dance clubs Sonar and Paradox. The city has wide-ranging bus network, a small light rail network, linking Hunt Valley in the north to BWI airport and Cromwell in the south, and a subway line connecting Owing Mills and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Vast numbers of radio stations are located in the city. Among others are the WBAL news/talk radio station owned by the Hearst Corporation, which owns the uppermost signal strength of any radio station in Maryland. The station employs the biggest number of news staff of any radio station in the state; the urban radio station WERQ owned by Radio One; and the public, non-commercial radio station WBJC. The Baltimore City Fire Department serves the city. It is made up of several divisions including fire suppression, emergency medical service, and the Office of the Fire Marshall.
