Cavite City Guide
Cavite is a coastal city in the province of Cavite, found in the southern Luzon region of the Philippines.  The city sits on a curved peninsula that extends out into the Manila Bay.  It lies 35 kms southwest from Manila and bordered to the south by the municipality of Noveleta.  Enclosing the peninsula to the southeast is Bacoor Bay and Cañacao Bay to the northeast.  Cavite used to serve as the provincial capital before it was superseded by Tres Martires City.

The first settlers in Cavite were Tagalogs, who called the area “tangway”, a Tagalog word for peninsula.  These settlers were primarily fisher-folk and traded with Chinese sea-faring merchants.  The evolution of its name to Cavite came about when the Spaniards mispronounced the word “kawit”, a Tagalog word for “hook that refers to the shape of the peninsula on which it stands on. These European colonizers took advantage of the strategic location of the area and built a naval base and port, christening the area as Puerto de Cavite.  The port figured prominently in the defense of Manila from the invading British and Dutch forces, and from the Chinese pirate Limahong.  The port was also the entry and departure point for galleon ships at the height of the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade from 1609 to 1616.

During the American occupation, Cavite was used as extensively by the United States just as the Spaniards did.  The US built the Sangley Point Naval Base and used it as the seat of the Us Asiatic Naval Forces.  At the outbreak of the Second World War in the Pacific, Cavite and Sangley Point were heavily air-raided and destroyed by Japanese bombers.  When the Japanese occupied Cavite in 1942, they rehabilitated the naval base and used it for the same purpose as the Spaniards and Americans had done.

After the war, Cavite gained economic and political stability.  On September 7, 1940, Cavite was declared a chartered city under the Philippine Commonwealth.  However in 1954, the provincial capital was moved from Cavite to Trece Martires after the Philippine Congress ratified the law for its transfer. The city charter was also amended, allowing for the election of the city leaders through ballot voting.  Sangley Point was turned over to the Philippine government in 1971 and is now being converted into an International Logistics center with a modern seaport and airport.  Cavite has also ventured into the tourism industry by amplifying and supporting the many beach resorts found in the city.

Residential Places in Cavite

The province of Cavite is largely a residential suburb of Metro Manila.  Just like most cities and municipalities found in the province, Cavite city also abounds with residential neighborhoods found in its 84 barangays.  Some of these neighborhoods are s contained within gated communities which are locally referred to as subdivisions and villages.  These gated communities are usually the preferred residential neighborhood of middle to upper class families.  They are often outlined by high defensive walls which are accessed through guarded gates.

Two of the city’s newest residential developments are the Avida Settings and Home Garden Community.  Real estate properties that may be bought or rented in these residential developments comprise of raw lots, lots with houses, and townhouses.

Hospitals and Universities of Cavite

Cavite has an abundance of private and government hospitals that can efficiently deal with medical emergencies and most basic medical procedures.  Public and private hospitals are considered to provide the same standard of healthcare to its patients, differing only with the medical facilities and accommodations.  These hospitals are staffed with qualified medical practitioners that are well-versed in English.  Filipino doctors are graduates of the many top Philippine medical schools, and have often pursued additional studies and training in the United States.  Filipino nurses are also the products of the many reputable nursing schools in the country.  These are the same institutions that had produced the many Filipino nurses that are working in the United States, Europe, and Middle East.
