The city’s major industries include crop production of rice, coconut, bananas, and vegetables, livestock production, commercial fishing, and metalwork manufacturing. The city also has a growing tourism industry, taking advantage of the city’s historical past and of the island’s scenic views and white sand beaches. Some of the city’s tourist attractions are the eco-tourism sites of Bulusan-Suqui Eco Trail, Caluangan Lake, Calapan Nature Park, and Bulusan Caves; agri-tourism farms of Cocofarm Spring Resort, Parang Coconut and Banana Plantations, Sapul Orchard, Masipit Fishponds, La Concynrich Farm Resort, and the Biga Ricefields Resorts; as well as the numerous resorts and beach resorts found in the city. Calapan was originally a barrio of the parish of Baco. In 1733, the District convent was transferred to the former, making Baco a barrio of Calapan. New barrios were established around the parish, contributing to the development of the new town. In 1837, the provincial capital was moved from Puerto Galera to Calapan after the former capital suffered from countless attacks from Muslim pirates from the south. On March 21, 1998, after over 150 years serving as the provincial capital, Calapan was converted into Mindoro’s first and only component city. It was enacted by Republic Act 8475, and signed into law by President Fidel V. Ramos on February 2, 1998. Residential Places in CalapanEach of the 62 barangays that politically subdivides Calapan city is composed of residential neighborhoods. Some of these neighborhoods are found in gated communities, which are referred to as subdivisions and villages by the locals. These are the most often preferred residence of middle and upper class families as they feature facilities and amenities not easily available to those living outside these gated communities. Common featured amenities in these are lighted and concrete paved streets, centralized water distribution system, garbage management, and recreational facilities, such as club houses, swimming pools, and basket/tennis courts. They often offer better security as most may have a walled perimeter and guarded gates. Some of the city’s subdivisions and villages include the Neo Calapan Subdivision, Mahogany Subdivision, Beaumont Ville, and Pachoca Homes Subdivision.Alternately, prime residential properties are also available outside these gated communities. As the city is located in an agricultural-based island, Calapan is never short of farmlands and beachfront properties. These properties may be bought as raw lots or houses with lots. Hospitals and Universities of Calapan Calapan has private and government tertiary care hospitals that can proficiently provide for the healthcare and medical needs of the city and the whole province. Either type of hospitals is considered to provide the same quality of healthcare, primarily differing with the available medical and diagnostic facilities at hand. These are staffed with qualified medical practitioners that are well-versed in English. One of these is the Divine word college of Calapan (DWCC) which stands on Infantado Street in Sta. Marica Village. This private Catholic institution was established in 1946 by the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) . It was first established as the Mindoro Junior College and offered courses in pre-law, liberal arts, and short courses in typing and stenography. Through the years, the DWCC had expanded its course offerings and gained its status as one of Oriental Mindoro’s premiere institution for engineering and teacher education. Aside from these, DWCC also offers degree and non-degree courses in other fields, such as business administration, public administration, tourism, hotel and restaurant management, computer science, medical transcription, commercial cooking, and contact center agent training. Commercial Places in Calapan Calapan does not have large shopping malls that have been a usual trademark of most major cities. Taking its place are several small commercial centers and independent retail establishments that can adequately provide most common commodities. Some of these establishments are the Budgetlane Shopping Center and the San Vicente Central. Service Establishments of Calapan Electricity in the city is generated by the National Power Corporation(NPC) and distributed by the Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative, Inc. (ORMECO). Providing additional power is ORMECO’s 1.2 MW Mini-Hydro Power Plant in Dulangan. Embassies in Calapan There are no foreign embassies or consulates found in the city of Calapan. The bulk of these diplomatic missions have their offices located in the cities of Makati and Manila in the National Capital Region found at the main island of Luzon. Daily flights to Manila are available from Calapan Airport to the Manila Domestic Airport in Pasay City. Bordering to the northeast of the city is Makati city. |
