Calapan City Guide
The City of Calapan, or Lungsod ng Calapan, is the capital city of the province of Oriental (Eastern) Mindoro, an island found at the southwestern coast of the island of Luzon in the Philippines.  The province is a component of Region IV-B, or MIMAROPA, which is an acronym for its constituent provinces of Occidental and Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan.  Calapan is situated at the head of Calapan Bay, on the northeastern portion of the province.  It is characterized by wide plains interrupted on its northeast end by the Bulusan Hill which has an elevation of 187 meters above sea level, and traversed by the Biga-Baco-Malaylay and Aglubang-Magasawang Tubig river systems interspersed by wet lands near the coast.  Bordering the city is the Calapan Bay to the north and northeast, the municipality of Naujan to the south and southeast, and the municipality of Baco to the west.  It is located 130 kilometers south of Manila, about 30 minutes away by plane via the Manila Domestic Airport, and 28 nautical miles from the Batangas International Port.

The city’s major industries include crop production of rice, coconut, bananas, and vegetables, livestock production, commercial fishing, and metalwork manufacturing.  The city also has a growing tourism industry, taking advantage of the city’s historical past and of the island’s scenic views and white sand beaches.  Some of the city’s tourist attractions are the eco-tourism sites of Bulusan-Suqui Eco Trail, Caluangan Lake,  Calapan Nature Park, and Bulusan Caves; agri-tourism farms of Cocofarm Spring Resort, Parang Coconut and Banana Plantations, Sapul Orchard, Masipit Fishponds, La Concynrich Farm Resort, and the Biga Ricefields Resorts; as well as the numerous resorts and beach resorts found in the city.

Calapan was originally a barrio of the parish of Baco.   In 1733, the District convent was transferred to the former, making Baco a barrio of Calapan.  New barrios were established around the parish, contributing to the development of the new town.  In 1837, the provincial capital was moved from Puerto Galera to Calapan after the former capital suffered from countless attacks from Muslim pirates from the south.

On March 21, 1998, after over 150 years serving as the provincial capital, Calapan was converted into Mindoro’s first and only component city.  It was enacted by Republic Act 8475, and signed into law by President Fidel V. Ramos on February 2, 1998.
