Where Calamba Got Its Name Legend has it that the city got its name when two guardia civil got lost as they were passing through what is now Calamba during the early years of Spanish occupation. They met a girl who came from the river carrying a jar of water and a stove. The soldiers asked for the name of the place they were in, but the girl speaking only her native language, did not understand. Thinking that they were inquiring what she was carrying, she anxiously muttered “kalan banga”, which meant “clay stove” and “water jar”. The Spanish soldiers could not pronounce the words properly, subsequently pronouncing it “Calamba” and naming the town after it. This legend has been immortalized with a large concrete water jar erected in the plaza with the city’s barangays engraved on it.
